Many important discoveries in science are made by accident. When scientists are doing experiments they sometimes find something unusual which may lead to a discovery. Sometimes scientists make discoveries by observing simple, everyday things. Newton, for instance, first got his ideas about gravity when he saw an apple fall from a tree. One of the greatest inventors of ancient time was Archimedes. He made an important discovery while taking a bath.

Many ideas for inventions actually come from nature. One classis example is the invention of the airplane. More than a century ago, its inventors, the Wright brothers, studied how birds fly.
