Eventually, they applied what they had observed to their new invention and make it fly like a bird. Another example is Velcro. In 1948 George de Mestral, a Swiss engineer, wondered why many furs stuck to his pants and his dog’s fur when they walked in the woods. Looking at the burs under a microscope, he noticed that each one consisted of numerous tiny hooks. Inspired by the discovery, he invented Velcro, a clever device used to fasten clothes. Besides the Wright brothers and Mestral, many other inventors got inspirations from nature, whose designs should therefore never be taken for granted, but rather be appreciated as a great source of invention.
