Some historical notes about our cherished Christmas traditions
第一篇是關於聖誕樹的傳說:
O' Christmas Tree
Hanging treasur objects on a tree dates back to medieval times, when every December 24, red apples were hung on evergree trees. The earliest account of a Christmas tree decorated with cookies and candies comes from the 1605 diary of a traveler to Strasbourg, in Alsace( present-day France ).
Tree lights also have their share of legends.According to an old manuscript found in a Sicilian monastery, when Christ was born, all the creatures of the earth went to Bethlehem to give Him gifts. Some trees, especially the fruit-bearing ones, had plenty to give;but the little fir tree, which had nothing to offer but evergreen needles, was pushed intonthe background. An angel, seeing the fir tree's plight, asked some stars to come down and rest on its dark boughs. When Jesus saw the shining tree, He blessed it--and the custom of Christmas-tree lights was born.
In 1882 the world's first electrically lighted Christmas tree was decorated in the New York City home of Edward Johnson, a colleague of Thomas Edison. In 1903 the Eveready Company produced the first strings of lights; by 1910 General Electric hsd added color. In the mid-60's flashing miniature lights became the biggest sellers.
