Gettysburg Address
(Delivered on the 19th Day of November, 1863 Cemetery Hill, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania )
Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth upon this continent a new Nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to theproposition that all men are created equal. Now, we are engaged in a great Civil War, testing whether that Nation, or any nation soconceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting-place for those who gave their lives that Nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it far above our power to add or detract. The world will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us, the living, rather to be dedicated to the great task remaining before us; that from these honored dead, we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion; that this Nation, under GOD, shall have a new birth of freedom; and that government of the People by the People and for the People shall not perish from the earth."

87年以前，我們的祖先在這塊大陸上建立了一個全新的國家，它孕育於自由，並用鮮血奉獻一種理念，即所有人都是生而平等的。
現在，我們正在參與一場偉大的內戰，我們接受考驗，究竟這個國家，或任何一個有這種主張和信仰的國家，能否長存。我們在那次戰場上集合，開闢這塊土地一角，曾為這個國家生存而犧牲奮鬥的烈士長眠之所，這是我們該做的事。
其實，我們無法使這片土地成為聖地，也不可能讓人們永遠懷念。我們無力左右它，除非先烈們在戰場上拋頭顱灑熱血，才能使這塊土地神聖了。世人絕不會在意或記得我們在此地所說的話，然而他們將永遠忘不了先烈在這裡所做的事。所以，我們要持續獻身於先烈們未竟之志，由於先烈們的光榮犧牲奉獻，我們要更堅定地完成先烈的遺志。我們在此誓言，絕不能讓先烈們平白犧牲，要讓這個國家在上帝庇佑之下，重新得到自由，我們絕不讓這個奉行民有、民治、民享的政府從地球上消失。 |
